Halon Replacement There have been many concerns over the safety of Halon to individuals and to the environment. So the question becomes to boaters, what should I use to replace my old Halon system I have on my boat today? Andy Speltz, Fire Marshal of the Red Wing Fire Department, did a little research for the Hiawatha Valley Sail and Power Squadron and found acceptable replacements for older Halon fire extinguishers. Nardini Fire Equipment of Shoreview, MN (651-483-6631) sells a system manufactured by FireBoy which use clean agents which are safe for the environment as well as for people. You can view the FireBoy products at http://www.fireboy-xintex.com/fire_extinguishing.html. The information contained in this article is not an endorsement nor recommendation by either Red Wing Fire Department or the Hiawatha Valley Sail and Power Squadron. This information is provided to individuals as a starting point of where they can choose a product like FireBoy or other manufacture to replace current Halon systems which meet the USCG fire extinguisher codes. |
